Arthritis Treatment with Ayurveda Therapies

Our Ayurvedic Treatments focus on arresting the progression of the arthritic disease and thereby improving functions of joints which includes internal medication and external treatment procedures. Some of the external treatments which we provide are -


Elakizhi Therapy (Potli)


In this fresh leaves are collected and cut to small pieces. These cut leaves are then fried in medicated oil along with coconut scrapes and lemon. It is then tied in a suitable cloth and made into a bolus. Leaves of Calotropis gigantean, Ricinus communis, Vites nigundo, Muoringa oilfera, Tamarind etc. are the ones generally used for the bolus preparation. The inclusion of herbal leaves in the preparation of bouls depends on the condition of the individual. Medicated oil is applied to the whole body in the affected area. Prepared bouls are heated in a small quantity of medicated oil and are applied over the body as soft punches. The technique nourishes the strained body parts and alleviates sore muscles and joints.


This therapy is effective in various types of arthritis, spondylitis, lumbago, frozen shoulder, sciatica, post paralytic spasm, sports injuries and for all other spastic and inflammatory conditions etc. It enhances peripheral blood circulation, cleanses the channels of circulation and expels toxins through the sweat. It helps in toning and rejuvenating the body. It takes a day for its preparation as fresh leaves are to be collected and prepared for the bolus. The duration of application of bouls to the body may vary 30 to 40 minutes depending up on the individual conditions. For this treatment Dhanwantaram Thailam, Prabhanjana vimardanam thailam, Sahacharady thailam, Murivenna, Karpooradi oil, Kottamchukkadi thailam etc. are mainly used. This may vary according to the conditions of the patient or instructions from the physician.



Janu Vasti Therapy


Janu vasti is a part of panchakarma in Ayurveda treatment. The term ‘janu’ refers to knee joint. It is the procedure whereby the medicated oil is retained in the knee joint for a particular duration. . The completely sealed wall boundary is made with the paste of black gram powder or wheat powder in the Janu (knee joint) region. The medicated oil is heated until it becomes lukewarm. This lukewarm medicated oil is then poured into the space inside the walled boundary in a constant and continuous stream. It is retained there for a particular period of time. The medicated oil is soaked up, heated to become lukewarm and poured back again by adding fresh oil in it. This repeated during the whole procedure.



This therapy helps in chronic knee pain and compacts degenerative disorders. It gives strength to the supporting muscles of the knee joined. It is very effective in osteoarthritis of knee joined and in cases of ligament injuries. The duration of treatment varies from 30 to 40 minutes depending upon the condition of individuals. This treatment is done in the course and is vary 7 to 14 days as instructed by the physician. Bala thailam, Sahacharaji thailam, karpooradi tailam, murivenna, Dhanwantaram tailam, kottomchukkadi tailam etc. are some of the medicated oils used for janu vasti. The ayurvedic oil used in the treatment depending on the conditions of the individual or directions of the physician.

Greeva Vasti Therapy


Greeva vasti is one of the parts of panchakarma in Ayurveda treatment. ‘Greeva’ refers to the neck region thus it is the procedure in which the medicated oil is retained in the neck region for a certain period of time. The completely sealed wall boundary is made with the paste of black gram powder or wheat powder in the greeva (nape of the neck) region. The medicated oil is heated until it becomes lukewarm. This lukewarm medicated oil is then poured into the space inside the walled boundary in a constant and continuous stream. It is retained there for a particular period of time. The medicated oil is soaked up, heated to become lukewarm and poured back again by adding fresh oil in it. This repeated during the whole procedure.


The therapy improves circulation, muscle and connective tissue strength, lubricates the joints and promotes its flexibility. Greeva alleviates cervical spondylitis, stiff neck, sore muscles, upper backaches etc. The duration of the treatment varies from 30 to 40 minutes depending upon the condition of the individual. This treatment is done for a particular period like seven days, 14 days etc. Dhanwantaram tailam, kottomchukkadi tailam, sahacharadi tailam,murivenna etc. are some of the medicated oils used for greeva vasti. The Ayurveda oil is selected depending upon the conditions of the patient or instructions from the physician.


Benefits of Greeva vasti are good for cervical spondylitis, stiff neck, sore muscles, neck pain etc.


Kati Vasti Therapy


The term Kati refers to the low back region. It is a procedure whereby medicated oil is retained for a certain period of time in the low back area. A completely sealed walled boundary is made with the paste of black gram powder or wheat powder in the Kati (low back) region. The medicated oil is heated until it becomes lukewarm. This lukewarm medicated oil is then poured into the space inside the walled boundary in a constant and continuous stream. It is retained there for a particular period of time. The medicated oil is soaked up, heated to becomes lukewarm and poured back again by adding fresh oil in it. This repeated during the whole procedure.


It helps in strengthening the muscles especially those in the low back region. It helps in alleviating neuronal complaints, lumbago and sciatica. The treatment is also effective in muscular spasm and inflammations in the low back region. Dhaanwantaram tailam, Sahacharady thailam, kottomchukkadi thailam, murivenna, karpoora thailam etc. are some of the medicated oils used for the treatment. The ayurvedic oils for the treatment are selecting depending upon the conditions of the patient or the direction of the physician. The duration of the treatment varies from 30 to 40 minutes depending upon the condition of the individual. The course of treatment depending upon the directions of the physician or the conditions of the individuals.


Benefits of Kati vasti are relieving occupational tension build-ups, stiffness, spasms, pains and aches, and is very effective for sciatic pains and spondylosis.


Abhyangam Therapy


Abhyangam is the basic massage in the Ayurveda treatment. The meaning of Abhyangam in Sanskrit is oil massage. It is an ideal massage for pregnant ladies.

Abhyangam is the application of medicated oil on the body followed by massage by a trained therapist. The lukewarm ayurvedic oiling is done by changing into seven different positions. This therapy acts on the whole body on both physical and mental level balancing the doshas. It helps to relieve the stiffness of joints and muscles and tones of muscles. It stimulates circulation, provides relief from anxiety, fatigue& depression. It improves the general well being& induces sound sleep.


Abhyangam is found to be very effective in certain Arthritic problems. It is advised in diseases like osteoarthritis, spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis etc. It is also advised in certain sports injuries and muscular spasms. It smoothens complexion, softens skin and prevents wrinkles. In Ayurveda, abhyanga is advised to be done on a daily basis that is it is advised as a dinacharya. Dhanwantaram thailam, prabhanjana vimardanam thailam, ksheerabala thailam, karpoora thailam, sahacharady thailam, bala thailam etc. are some of the medicated oils are used for abhyangam. The medicated oil is selected as per the constitution and condition of the individual by the physician. In this treatment head and face also included for the massage. After the treatment of abhyangam, steam bath is good for the refreshment.


Pizhichil Therapy


Thaila Dhara or Pizhichil is the combination of two classical ayurvedic treatments, Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation). It is one of the parts of Panchakarma treatment in Ayurveda. Thaila dhara or pizhichil is one of the common forms of Kerala Ayurveda Chikitsa. It is the procedure in which streams of lukewarm medicated oil is poured on the whole body or the affected area with a simultaneous soft massage. The procedure requires three trained therapist – one for warming the oil and two others for pouring the warm medicated oil over the whole body or affected area.


Taila Dhara is useful for rheumatic complaints, arthritis, neurological disorders and paralysis. It is proven to be effective in cases of anxiety and body aches. The benefits of the treatment rejuvenate the body, nourishes the skin and keeps it young, regulating blood pressure, combating depression and preventing ageing. It helps in promoting proper circulation and hence clearing the channels. The duration of the treatment varies from 30 to 45 minutes. The treatment is done in a course like 7 days, 14 days etc. depending on the conditions of the patient. Dhanwndharam tailam, bala tailam, praphanjanabanam tailam, sahacharadi tailam etc. are some of the medicated oils used for taila dhara or pizhichil. Medicated oil is using for the treatment is depend on the direction of the physician.
